    Research support for Virtual Environment technology development has been a part of NASA's human factors research program since 1985. Under the auspices of the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST), initial funding was provided to the Aerospace Human Factors Research Division, Ames Research Center, which resulted in the origination of this technology. Since 1985, other Centers have begun using and developing this technology. At each research and space flight center, NASA missions have been major drivers of the technology. This White Paper was the joint effort of all the Centers which have been involved in the development of technology and its applications to their unique missions. Appendix A is the list of those who have worked to prepare the document, directed by Dr. Cynthia H. Null, Ames Research Center, and Dr. James P. Jenkins, NASA Headquarters. This White Paper describes the technology and its applications in NASA Centers (Chapters 1, 2 and 3), the potential roles it can take in NASA (Chapters 4 and 5), and a roadmap of the next 5 years (FY 1994-1998). The audience for this White Paper consists of managers, engineers, scientists and the general public with an interest in Virtual Environment technology. Those who read the paper will determine whether this roadmap, or others, are to be followed

    MAVERICK: A Synthetic Murder Mystery Network Dataset to Support Sensemaking Research

    AbstractThe MAVERICK dataset was created to support a series of empirical studies looking at the effectiveness of network visualizations intended to support information foraging and human sensemaking within the domain of counterinsurgency intelligence analysis. This synthetic dataset is structured as a forensic mystery with the central goal of solving a fictional murder. The dataset includes 181 text-based reports, with additional media included with some messages as attachments, collected from various sources of varying reliability. The reports are framed as being collected from the perspective of a reporter investigating the murder through interviews with suspects and observations taken at the site the murder. The dataset includes intentional and unintentional deception along with calculated source reliabilities based on available evidence. The dataset is dynamic in nature, as the information in the dataset evolves and expands over a simulated period of time. This is done to both to simulate a real-world scenario, and to allow for evolutionary tasks and experiments to be performed using the dataset. The dataset is designed to be complex enough to simulate a real-world, while remaining accessible to individuals without experience in a specific domain of interest. This meant that it had to be on a topic that did not require prior domain knowledge to understand available information or to understand what strategies should be applied during analysis of the dataset. The solution to these challenges was the development of a fictional murder mystery. The plot involves a murder that took place over the course of a weekend with several possible suspects at a large private estate. This scenario allowed for a great deal of complexity; however, it was also a subject matter that could be easily understood by participants without prerequisite domain experience

    Working with soil, sand, powders, ores, cement and sintered bricks, excavating, grading construction sites, driving off-road, transporting granules in chutes and pipes, sifting gravel, separating solids from gases, and using hoppers are so routine that it seems straightforward to do it on the Moon and Mars as we do it on Earth. This paper brings to the fore how little these processes are understood and the millennia-long trial-and-error practices that lead to today's massive over-design, high failure rate, and extensive incremental scaling up of industrial processes because of the inadequate predictive tools for design.     Bedforms Produced on a Particle Bed by Vertical Oscillations of a Plate

    We describe a new mechanism that produces bedforms and characterize the conditions under which it operates. The mechanism is associated with pressure gradients generated in a fluid saturated particle bed by a plate oscillating in the water above it. These vertical pressure gradients cause oscillatory bed failure. This facilitates particle displacement in its interior and transport at and near its surface that contribute to the formation of a heap under the plate. Flows over erodible beds generally cause shear stresses on the bed and these induce bed failure. Failure driven by pressure gradients is different from this. We report on bedforms in a bed of glass beads associated with such fluctuating pressure gradients. We measure the development of the profiles of heaps as a function of time and determine the tangential and normal motion of areas on the beds surface and estimate the depth of penetration of the tangential transport. The measurements compare favorably with a simple model that describes the onset of failure due to oscillations in pressure

    Pseudo-Dirac Neutrinos in the New Standard Model

    The addition of gauge singlet fermions to the Standard Model Lagrangian renders the neutrinos massive and allows one to explain all that is experimentally known about neutrino masses and lepton mixing by varying the values of the Majorana mass parameters M for the gauge singlets and the neutrino Yukawa couplings. Here we explore the region of parameter space where M values are much smaller than the neutrino Dirac masses. In this region, neutrinos are pseudo-Dirac fermions. We find that current solar data constrain M values to be less than at least 1E-9 eV, and discuss the sensitivity of future experiments to tiny gauge singlet fermion masses. We also discuss a useful basis for analyzing pseudo-Dirac neutrino mixing effects. In particular, we identify a simple relationship between elements of M and the induced enlarged mixing matrix and new mass-squared differences. These allow one to directly relate bounds on the new mass-squared differences to bounds on the singlet fermion Majorana masses.Comment: 20 Pages, 9 .eps figures, Updated reference

    Factors that support Indigenous involvement in multi-actor environmental stewardship

    Regional, multi-actor environmental collaborations bring together diverse parties to achieve environmental protection and stewardship outcomes. Involving a range of participants helps involve alternative forms of knowledge, expertise, and perspectives; it may also present greater challenges in reaching agreements, particularly when both Indigenous and non-Indigenous parties are involved. The authors conduct a cross-case study of 39 regional partnerships involving Indigenous nations from the Great Lakes basin of North America with the aim of determining the factors that enable Indigenous partners to remain engaged in multi-actor collaborations. Six characteristics influenced Indigenous nations’ willingness to remain engaged: respect for Indigenous knowledges, control of knowledge mobilization, intergenerational involvement, self-determination, continuous cross-cultural education, and early involvement. Being attentive of these factors can help partnerships achieve their environmental goals by keeping important partners at the table
